Zermatt
Zermatt's skyline is dominated by the Matterhorn. At 4478m it is one of the most impressive, world famous mountains in the Alps. A virtually car-free village, it is reached by a fascinating mountain railway that climbs up from Brig in the Rhone Valley, (cars are left at Tasch, 10 minutes away by train).
With its cogwheel railways and cable cars, there is a huge variety of excursions to choose from; walks on the slopes around the village, full day rambles amongst the higher peaks, a visit up the famous Gornergrat Mountain Railway (up to 3089m), the underground Sunnegga Express funicular and Rothorn cable car to 3118m or the cable cars to the Klein Matterhorn at 3883m.
Zermatt has managed to retain its charm and character with pleasant stublis and folklore evenings as well as bars, discos and over 100 restaurants. Due to its altitude, you can even enjoy a spot of summer skiing on Zermatt's unique snow beach.
