Out & About

With the longest converted shopping promenade in Europe, you can enjoy 6km of Medieval arcades hosting a variety of shops from small independent to department stores. Alternatively why not visit the market in Waisenhausplatz (open Tuesday & Saturday), the beautiful flower, fruit and vegetable market on Parliament square (open Tuesday & Saturday morning) or the flea market on Muhleplatz (open every third Saturday of the month).

Berne

The beautiful capital or Switzerland, Berne offers spectacular views of the surrounding Alps and is a great destination for an exciting and relaxing cultural break.

The Old Town of Berne has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site with some of the finest medieval architecture in Europe including the famous clock tower, the Gothic cathedral - The Munster and 11 unique street fountains.

The city centre is built around the River Aare and has maintained its original cobbled streets and sandstone buildings creating a charming and pleasant atmosphere.

Sightseeing

You can choose to join one of many guided tours or explore the city on your own either by foot or the many means of transport available. The rest of Switzerland is easily accessible from Berne by rail, making it an ideal base for day trips. Below is a small selection of the many sights available in this exciting city.

Bear Pits:
Berne is famous for its bear pits, which according to myth, originated when the founder of Berne killed a bear in the area.

Clock Tower:
One of Berne's most popular sights, the famous clock was created in 1530 and acted as the city's main clock.

Einstein Museum:
Albert Einstein was living in Berne when he wrote the theory of relativity in1905

Munster Cathedral: Munster Cathedral is Switzerland's largest church and is well worth a visit.From the highest church tower in Berne you can enjoy spectacular views of the city

Getting Around
Best done on foot, but bikes and horse drawn carriages are available for hire. There is a comprehensive tram and bus system and taxis are easy to find. Situated in the heart of Switzerland, Berne is easily accessible with direct train services from both Geneva and Zurich Airport.
