Interlaken
The picturesque town of Interlaken lies in the heart of the Bernese Oberland, set between the two beautiful lakes of Thun and Brienz. In the centre of the town there is a great open meadow, the Hohematte and from here the panorama of the Jungfrau mountain is perhaps one of the most famous views in the world.
As you stroll along Interlaken's main street, the Hoheweg, you pass attractive little shops with Swiss handicrafts, superb jewellery and delicious hand-made chocolates, whilst each week there is also a lively street market. In Interlaken's narrow streets you will find charming little flower-decked squares and picturesque old buildings and at least once during your stay you should take afternoon tea at the famous cafe Schuh, with it's mouth watering Swiss pastries.
One of the great joys of a holiday in the Bernese Oberland is the walking. There are casual strolls out from the town along the lakesides or wonderful full days out in the mountains. For lazier days enjoy a cruise on one of the lakes, or take a funicular up to one of the vantage points above the town for magnificent views. Interlaken is the centre of a superb network of boat, steamer, train and bus services which take you to virtually every corner of the region.
